Founders First partner, Sparkke has won two awards for their brewpub Sparkke at the Whitmore at the AIA’s South Australian Architecture Awards.
Designed by Troppo Architects the venue won the heritage architecture award for restoring the historic pub dating all the way back to 1851, just 15 years after Adelaide’s founding.
During the restoration of the former brothel, many features were uncovered including a well that was covered with a porthole and exposed timber roof shingles. The brewpub also features a beer garden, rooftop bar, bottle shop and restaurant.
The pub has multiple spaces with the kitchen and brewery located in the center and is filled with light. The recently opened rooftop terrace over looks the iconic Whitmore Square.
AIA Juror Kirsteen MacKay said, "You’re looking right across the tree canopy of the square. You can see the hills and beyond. It might be modest in scale, but it’s a fantastic outcome.”
Sparkke, being a social enterprise are helping to breathe new life into Whitmore Square, as the south-west of the city is seeing a positive shift and is no longer a place to avoid. '
